Tips for Getting Through a Winter Pregnancy

Tips for Getting Through a Winter Pregnancy

You’ve got a little life growing inside you! That’s incredibly exciting, but baby -- it’s cold outside -- how will you manage?

At FemmPro OB/GYN, we help women in all seasons manage during pregnancy. Here are some tips for helping you and your growing baby stay safe so you can thrive during the snow, frigid temperatures, and dark days of winter.

Drink up

While alcohol is off-limits, you do need to stay hydrated. You may think of dehydration in the hot summer months, but winter air can be quite drying as can indoor heating. Drink plenty of water and seek out hydrating foods, like salads and fresh fruit.

Protect yourself from the flu

Flu season usually ramps up in November. It’s wise to get your flu shot to protect you from this illness. Flu can make you feel extra sick during pregnancy and potentially cause complications.

Pregnancy can make you more susceptible to colds and other viruses, too. Take smart hygiene precautions, too, like washing your hands and avoiding large crowds as much as you can.

Watch for ice

Icy roads and sidewalks are a hazard, especially when you're pregnant. Take extra care in parking lots and other places that harbor black ice. Your center of gravity shifts as your belly grows. If you should fall, call us and come in for a quick checkup to make sure everything is ok.

Exercise, but smartly

Winter sports like skiing, ice skating, and snowboarding put you at risk of falls that cause pregnancy complications. Talk to us about the best way to stay physically active during pregnancy.

Walking or cycling (indoors on a treadmill or stationary bicycle), prenatal yoga and water fitness may all be appropriate, depending on your fitness level and stage of pregnancy. Exercising during pregnancy can help keep your weight gain in check and make labor and delivery go more smoothly

Keep your skin moist

Dry, flaky skin can be especially irritating during pregnancy. The dryness of winter weather and indoor heating can make your skin flake and itch, particularly around your belly. Use a moisturizer made for sensitive skin to stay hydrated and, of course, drink plenty of water.

Dress in layers

During pregnancy, your body temperature can fluctuate. Dress in layers so you can peel off a jacket if you’re feeling heated. You may even prefer a poncho or cape to accommodate your growing belly -- you may find buttoning your winter coat is challenging in the last trimester.

Ask for help

Winter usually means the holidays, which can add stress to your days. Enjoy the holiday season, but remember to get plenty of sleep and ask for help if all the shopping, decorating, and gift wrapping are stressing you out. Once your baby is born, life will get even busier, so use this time to spend time with your partner and enjoy quiet time.
