Vital signs check
Your OB/GYN specialist evaluates your blood pressure, weight, pulse, and other vital signs. They also review your medical history.
Physical examination
Your provider completes a comprehensive physical examination, including a pelvic exam as needed to evaluate your reproductive health. If you’re pregnant, they might listen to your baby’s heartbeat, feel for fetal movement, and measure your abdomen.
Diagnostic testing
During a pelvic examination, your midwife inserts a special instrument into your vagina to scrape a sample of cells from your cervix during a Pap test. Doing so allows them to screen for signs of cervical cancer.
They might recommend you undergo a breast exam or mammogram to screen for breast cancer. Other diagnostic tests available include urine tests, blood tests, ultrasounds, and other imaging procedures.
Your midwife can counsel you about contraception, family planning, proper nutrition, and other healthy lifestyle habits. They might recommend vaccinations, prescription medicines, over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements, or specialist referrals as needed.
